The Mayflower Pilgrims (the religious Separatists among the passengers, often called Pilgrims) were

strict Protestant Separatists influenced by Calvinist theology, they strongly rejected any veneration, honor, or devotional practices toward Mary (or any saints) that were common in Catholicism or even the Church of England.

They viewed such practices as unbiblical, idolatrous, and remnants of "popery."

They rejected icons, statues, relics, and religious symbols, including anything associated with saints or Mary.

They opposed the Catholic/ Anglican emphasis on Mary (e.g., titles like "Mother of God" in a devotional sense, prayers to her, or her intercession).

They saw these as human inventions not supported by Scripture, diverting glory from Christ alone.

The Pilgrims sought to purify worship to biblical essentials only, separating entirely from what they saw as corrupted traditions. They acknowledged Mary's historical and biblical role but gave her no special ongoing honor or role in salvation. This aligns with broader Puritan and Separatist views, which emphasized sola scriptura (Scripture alone) and opposed anything perceived as elevating humans (even Mary) above their scriptural place.

📜 Context

Early Attempts:

Before permanent colonies, England sponsored exploratory voyages.

In 1584, Queen Elizabeth I granted Sir Walter Raleigh a charter to explore and colonize lands in North America.

June 24, 1584 (Gregorian calendar):

Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe landed on Roanoke Island (off modern North Carolina).

They claimed the land for England and reported back enthusiastically about its fertility and potential.

This marked the first recorded English footfall on mainland America.

Roanoke Colony (1585–1590):

Following this landing, Raleigh attempted to establish the Roanoke Colony in 1585.

The colony ultimately failed, becoming known as the “Lost Colony.”

Jamestown (1607):

The first permanent English settlement was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, on May 14, 1607.

This is often remembered as the true beginning of British America, though earlier landings like Amadas and Barlowe’s were exploratory.

🌍 Key Point

Exploratory landing: June 24, 1584 (Amadas & Barlowe).

June 24 is the Feast of St John the Baptist.

Permanent settlement: May 14, 1607 (Jamestown).

May 14, 1948 - Israel re-born.

When the Virginia Company established the settlement in 1607, they named it Jamestown in honor of King James I, their reigning monarch.

The surrounding river was also named the James River.

Symbolic Role:

Jamestown represents the beginning of permanent English colonization in America.

Its name ties the colony directly to royal authority, emphasizing England’s claim and the settlers’ loyalty to their king.

13 + 13 days .

The 13 Colonies were British settlements along the Atlantic coast of North America, founded between 1607 and 1732, which later united to declare independence in 1776 and form the United States.

On the U.S. one‑dollar bill, the number 13 appears repeatedly as a symbolic reference to the original 13 colonies that became the United States. These “thirteens” are woven into the design as reminders of unity and foundation.
