In Scripture, smoke (especially incense smoke) represents:

prayer rising to God (Psalm 141:2; Revelation 5:8; 8:3–4)

holiness, sanctuary, presence, mystery,

the Shekinah cloud that fills the Temple.

Mary is the icon of perfect prayer, so she naturally aligns with this symbol.

Mary is:

the Ark of the Covenant,

the Holy of Holies,

the dwelling place of the Word,

The Temple cloud/smoke imagery can be applied to Mary the Mother of God as well.

In the Old Testament:

The Temple is filled with smoke when God’s presence enters it.

If Mary is the living Temple, then the symbolism transfers:

Mary = the place where the divine presence dwells → associated with sacred smoke.

3️⃣ Incense smoke = purity, fragrance, offering

Mary is described in tradition as:

pure

fragrant (Song of Songs imagery)

an offering of obedience

the one whose “yes” rises to God

Incense smoke is the visual symbol of these qualities.

4️⃣ Smoke as “veil” → Mary as the mystical veil

Smoke in Scripture often veils the presence of God:

Sinai covered in smoke

Temple filled with smoke

Cloud of glory covering the Ark

Mary is the veil of the Incarnation — the one through whom the invisible becomes visible.

So symbolically:

Smoke = the gentle veil of divine mystery → Mary embodies this.

Abraham looks up and sees:

He runs to meet them

He bows low to the ground

These three are traditionally understood as:

A theophany in triadic form (God appearing with two angels)

In the New Testament, Jesus’ death is described using ransom language that deliberately echoes kōpher:

God told Noah to cover the Ark with "pitch" (tar) to keep the deadly floodwaters out.
