The feast of the Annunciation of the Archangel St. Gabriel to Our Lady is one of the oldest feasts in the Church.

According to Tradition, the 25th of March was also the day Jesus was crucified and died on the Cross: the original Good Friday.

For this reason it is the feast day of St. Dismas, the good thief, to whom Jesus promised Paradise while they were on mount Golgotha.

It is also pointed to as the day of the Creation of the World.

For many centuries in Europe — including England, Scotland, and much of Christendom — the year did not begin on January 1.

Instead, the year began on:

March 25 — the Feast of the Annunciation

(also called Lady Day)

This was the day Christians commemorated the angel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she would conceive Jesus.
